Castle Critique - Cahir Castle

Bio

Cahir Castle is one of the largest and most well preserved castles in Ireland. It was built on an island or the River Suir. It was built in the 13th century and was a stronghold for a powerful family. It was thought to be impregnable until it fell in 1599 under heavy artillery.

Allure/Crenelations:It has crenelations and a wall walk surrounding the majority of the castle and keep, providing strong defense against incoming attackers.
Moat:Although it does not have a constructed moat, it is surrounded by river on three sides, making it well fortified and defensible during siege.
Enceinte:The castle is completely surrounded by defensive walls, and has towers on every corner.

Curtain Walls:The curtain walls are tall, built with tight mortared stone. They are smooth and would make climbing them difficult.
Fortified Towers:The towers are well placed, and all have defensive fortifications such as arrow slits and crenels.
Plinth:Although there is no constructed plinth, it has a natural plinth made of the stone it was built on surrounding some sides.
Gatehouse:The gatehouse has a large, sturdy gate above which are machicolations with lots of space to drop large things upon attackers.
Hoardings:The castle does not have any hoardings as of present.
Machicolations:Although there are few machicolations, they are present in key areas like above the gate.
High Ground/Defensive Position:The castle is built on a rocky island in the middle of a river. It's defensive positioning is above standard.

The castle is very well fortified, and truly a prime example of a true traditional castle. Alongside it's practicality, it remains to be a beautiful piece of historical architecture despite being admittedly bland. It's impressive build quality will outlive most modern structures. Being an Irish castle, and having the critics be of Irish heritage there is a clear bias here. It would also just be a badass zombie apocalypse bunker.
